Finally, we have arrived at my favourite genre of writing: persuasive writing! I cannot wait to delve into my compelling piece. However, I must not get ahead of myself. Using the information I obtained, I will further enhance and harness my skills in this genre in my LIT 102 class.
In our LIT102 writing session, we were presented with exciting facts regarding persuasive writing. For me, the ‘key’ word during this session was art. This is so because my colleagues and I were informed that persuasive writing is the art of gaining favourable consideration for one’s point of view, which I deem to be true.
Some of you may be wondering why I like persuasive writing so much. This type of writing resonates the most with me because it is used to change a person’s perception or attitude towards a point of view. I am not bragging, but I like to use persuasion. I want to get others to see my point of view using authoritative evidence and a ‘sweet touch’ of emotive language. When done correctly, I can be a very effective persuader. However, if you disagree or doubt my persuasive abilities, you haven’t fallen ‘prey’ to my persuasive charm yet.

Other effective persuasive techniques include exaggeration, contrast, rhetorical questions, direct personal appeal, and repetition.I found the following insightful video on persuasive writing. The information presented is detailed. Please enjoy it.
Hello Denisha, from reading your blog, it clearly stated that this is your favourite genre of writing. However, I find it a bit challenging. Just having to think about convincing someone on a selected topic and having to present supporting details on your topic sentence seems very time consuming and lots of writing. What advise can you give to me when doing my persuasive piece? Have you ever tried this type of writing with your students before? Thanks much for the reminder on the persuasive techniques that one must include in their writing piece.
ReplyDeleteHello Makeda,
DeleteBefore you start writing, it is crucial to understand who your audience is and what they care about. This will help you tailor your argument to their interests and values. Your argument should also be something you can support with credible evidence. I found that the more controversial the topic, the more evidence you need to support your claims. Yes, I have used this writing genre with my students in the past.
Hey everyone, I'm with Makeda on this one. Persuasive writing is challenging!! However, I love to read persuasive essays. Thank you for the advice on knowing your audience. This is an important point. Looking for credible sources can also be tedious but it helps convince people of what you saying. People would believe anything experts have to say.
ReplyDeleteDessy-Ann,
ReplyDeletepersuasive writing also arouses students' interest by allowing them to write about topics they care about, increasing their engagement and motivation. When students can write persuasively about subjects they are passionate about, they are more likely to willingly spend time thinking, dialoging, and creating ideas in meaningful ways. This, therefore, helps students formulate specific reasons for their opinions and provides an opportunity to research facts related to their opinions, which can lead to a deeper understanding of the persuasive nature of the media they are exposed to.
I agree with the statements above!!!! LOL
